Position Overview:

The Dallas Morning News is seeking a highly experienced Press Operator to immediately enhance the technical capabilities of our pressroom team. We are specifically seeking candidates with hands-on expertise in Goss SSC shafted presses, MegTec splicers, DCOS automated press controls, and related systems. This is not a general trainee role — we need someone who can step in from day one and operate at a high level with minimal ramp-up.

Each night, our team prints over 150,000 copies, including our flagship newspaper and multiple national commercial titles. This position plays a key role in maintaining our standards of print quality, efficiency, and reliability.

Key Equipment Experience Required:

To be considered, candidates must have direct experience operating:

  • Goss SSC single-wide, single-round shafted press
  • MegTec zero-speed reel stands and splicers
  • DCOS automation controls, including:
    • Auto density
    • Auto registration
    • Cutoff compensation
  • Parreta Inking Systems
  • SLS 3000 inserters
  • Forklifts, clamp trucks, and ride-on dollies

Performance Objectives:

Immediate Expectations:

  • Begin operating Goss SSC press systems with minimal onboarding
  • Troubleshoot mechanical and quality issues independently
  • Meet nightly production targets of 150,000+ copies
  • Maintain press quality to SNAP (industry) standards using DCOS controls

First 30 Days:

  • Independently operate reel stands and splicers
  • Demonstrate accuracy in nightly production logs, press settings, and maintenance records

By 90 Days:

  • Safely operate powered industrial trucks and assist in mentoring junior press staff
  • Support efficiency improvements and contribute to reducing press downtime

Ongoing:

  • Exhibit leadership in teamwork, communication, and safety practices
  • Position yourself as a candidate for shift lead roles with increased responsibility and lead pay ($2.00/hr bump) when “in charge”

Ideal Candidate Profile:

You are:

  • Already proficient in the equipment and systems listed above
  • Comfortable with deadline pressure, quick troubleshooting, and high-volume runs
  • A team-oriented press professional who can both operate and lead
  • Focused on results, accuracy, and accountability in every shift
  • Open to mentoring and growth into supervisory or technical leadership roles

Work Environment:

  • Industrial pressroom with exposure to ink, paper dust, noise, and moving machinery
  • Physical requirements include standing, climbing, and lifting up to 50 lbs
  • PPE provided and required
  • Reports to a Press Supervisor and works closely with a 4–8 person night crew

Compensation & Benefits:

  • Pay Range: $21–$27 per hour, based on experience
  • $2.00/hr lead premium when assigned “in charge” duties
